Hope Not Hate

Please join us on January 17th, 2024, 7 pm, at the IU Neal-Marshall Black Cultural Center for the Hope Not Hate concert in remembering the January 11th, 2023 racial violence, in which anIU Asian student was brutally and repeatedly stabbed in the head on a Bloomington bus by a white woman. Composer Daixuan Ai and the IU Asian Culture Center, the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and the Jacobs School of Music Office of Entrepreneurship and Career Development are organizing this event to reflect on the impact of all forms of racism and hate against Asians and to offer a space for the IU and Bloomington community to heal through art.

Hope Not Hate is an interdisciplinary event, showcasing composer Daixuan Ai’s Silent Theater, a score inspired by Beijing Opera. Daixuan describes the direction in the score as multiple alternations between violent and upbeat to signify the musical representation of the stabs and the Beijing Opera music respectively. The event will also highlight the work of other artists including IU MFA student David Park’s poem and IU graphic design student Christine Wang’s digital art works on the importance of community building and healing. The event will conclude with messages of hope and solidarity by renowned author, activist, and founder of Vincent Chin Institute, Helen Zia. Following the event is a reception provided by the IU Asian Culture Center where attendees have the opportunity to support the culture center’s work through donations. Mental health counselors from IU Counseling and Psychology will also be available throughout the event and reception to discuss any concerns or questions. This event is free and open to the public.
